Hotel Belle View                Characters: Hotel manager; 2 or 3  "gentlemen"

A         Good morning. What can I do for you?

B         You've seen us before, haven't you?

A         I don't think so.

B         We've seen you, though. In fact we've been watching the hotel for some time, haven't we Joe?

C         Yes. It has been very interesting.

B         We have been noticing how well you've been doing; haven't we, Joe?

C         We have indeed.

B         You have built up a nice little business, hasn't he, Joe?

C         Remunerative.

B         But have you thought of the dangers?

A         Dangers? What dangers are you talking about?

B         In a dangerous area, a business like this needs protecting, doesn't it Joe?

C         Yes, especially with the clientele that you have here. They're  ………easily frightened! You  know what I mean!

B         A business like yours needs ……….??

C         Protection.

B         Exactly. "Protection". Better safe than sorry, eh Joe?

C         Well, The Grand Hotel has been  extremely…….

B         sorry. Yes, The Grand Hotel has lost a lot of money. (laughs)

C         Yes. A great pity. We told them that there were jealous people about.

A         It caught fire, didn't it?

B         Yes, and we had been telling them for weeks that…

C         "They needed protection". Tut tut, they didn't understand!

B         Maybe, we didn't make ourselves understood!

A         I think you have made yourselves perfectly clear.

B         If only everyone that we deal with was so quick to see their own advantage, eh Joe?

A         How much does your service cost?

C         Our other clients round here have been paying £ 1,000 a month.

A         £ 1,000 a month! I can't afford to pay as much as that!

B         Ah, but the Grand Hotel has paid rather a lot more; eh Joe?

C         Yeah! They've paid a lot for all the repairs.

B         And then what has been worse, they haven't had a paying guest for months and months.

C         A great pity! Unfortunate!

A         I understand.

B         Excellent!

C         It has been a pleasure talking to you.

Jo        Ah! The price!  I'm afraid that the price has increased. It has become twice as much!

H   .    Twice as much?

Mario             Yes, we've been here twice now! So: that's "twice as much"! (chuckles)

Jo.       (chuckles) Twice. That's right; twice as much

DAVE REMEMBERS

My Mum and Dad didn't like me.                    They locked me in a room.

When I came home I went to my room.           I was always in my room.

One day I stole 4 pieces of bread.                    My dad caught me.

He hit me.   One day I ran away.                     They sent me to a foster home.

There they hit me with a belt.                           I ran away again.

They sent me to a children's home.                 Why did my Mum and Dad send me

                                                                                              away?

I had a new foster mother Sue.                         Sue  listened to me.

She was not soft. She was strict.                      But she cared.

When she said "no", she meant "no".              I understood that.

But she talked.   She always talked to me.       She explained.

I listened.           She cared.                              I was part of her family.

Why was she better than my Mum?                Sue helped me find a job.

I was lucky.                                                     I lost my parents and I found Sue

I was lucky.                                                     Life is just luck  or bad luck.

SHORT STORY

Imagine that when you were born your mother had not been able to look after you and instead you had been given to an Aunt. You have not had a happy childhood. You always seem to be the last one. It seems that you are not important. When you are 15, one day something happens  that makes you decide to run away. You would rather look after yourself than have to live in that family with your unpleasant Aunt and Uncle and their nasty children.
